Signs of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
By The Honey Pot Company
We ensure that our tampons are made with 100% organic cotton and are free of dyes, pesticides and any other lurking toxins. We also list every ingredient on our box, unlike most conventional tampons. Since our tampons are made with a natural fiber it also helps to prevent irritation and infection when using.
However, with tampon use there is a small risk of developing Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare infection that is caused by either staph or strep bacteria. These bacteria are often found naturally occurring in the vagina, but when a product like a tampon is inserted and left too long it can breed more bacteria causing an overgrowth of toxins that spreads through your bloodstream.
Some TSS signs and symptoms include a high fever (102F or higher), dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, and a red, splotchy sunburn-like rash. These are also the symptoms of other illnesses, but if you experience these symptoms suddenly after using a tampon, remove it immediately and head to the hospital to determine if it’s Toxic Shock Syndrome and receive treatment.
Learning how to prevent TSS is crucial to avoiding this possibly life-threatening infection. Below are some ways to reduce the risk of TSS:
Wash your hands thoroughly before and after inserting a tampon.
Change your tampon frequently, every 4-6 hours.
Change sizes to match your flow throughout your period. Try to avoid high absorbency tampons as much as possible.
Alternate between pads and tampons when you can to help reduce a bacterial breeding ground.
