Be the Advocate You Deserve

By: The Honey Pot Company

Medical advocacy refers to the act of advocating for one's own healthcare needs, rights and interests, as well as the needs, rights, and interests of others. Here are a few ways to become a self-advocate:

Family History

👩🏾‍⚕️ Sit down with your family to get an understanding of their medical history. Many medical conditions could be genetic and have an effect on your health and should likely inform your doctor’s directives.

Build a Support System

👩🏾‍⚕️Don’t go through it alone. A support system is more than listing someone as your emergency contact. Make sure that you have humans in your corner who are up to date with your health and can provide physical and emotional support when needed.

Find a doctor you can trust

👩🏾‍⚕️ Choose a doctor who listens to your concerns, has experience in relative conditions, and works with you to develop a treatment plan.

Prepared Questions

👩🏾‍⚕️ Any and all concerns you may have are valid. To ensure that you get all your questions answered come prepared with a list and makes notes of the conversation.

Communicate effectively| Previous & Current Conditions

👩🏾‍⚕️ This is not the time to be shy! Don’t worry, a good doctor isn’t there to judge but to offer you the best care. Be honest about your sexual history, any changes to your period or vagina, weight gain etc. If you’re feeling pain keep a record of the severity, timing and type. Remember, knowing these important indicators of your health starts with being attuned with your body.

Speak up

👩🏾‍⚕️If you are not satisfied with your healthcare, express your concerns and look for alternative options if necessary.

By following these steps, you can become an effective advocate for yourself and ensure that your healthcare needs are met.
