After getting it on you notice some red spots between your legs or on the sheets. You’re bleeding! What can this mean? Well, if this is a rare occurrence, it’s usually nothing major or a reason to be concerned. However, everyone should listen to what their body is telling them, and below are a few reasons you could be bleeding after sex (period sex not included).
Postcoital bleeding could be a sign that you have an STI or other type of vaginal infection such as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. Infections can cause inflammation in your cervix which is what causes the bleeding. If you suspect you could have an infection and have other symptoms (strong unpleasant odor, watery or a cottage-cheese like discharge, pain during intercourse or urination, etc.) it’s best to consult with your doctor asap. Cervical polyps or fibroids can also cause pain and bleeding, especially post-sex. These tiny growths are fairly common and non-cancerous, and can be removed by your ob/gyn.
If you have frequent spotting after sex, you might just need to use our moisturizing water-based lube. If you’re not wet enough during P in V intercourse, vaginal dryness can cause tearing irritation and some slight bleeding afterwards. Dryness can be exacerbated by hormonal birth control. If you’ve just started a new contraception and notice spotting/bleeding after sex, contact your gynecologist to discuss an alternate option that may work better for you. There are a variety of types of birth control other than the pill.
Sex should be fun, and there’s no reason to suffer in silence. If you are experiencing any sort of consistent pain, discomfort or bleeding always consult with your doctor! For everything in-between, check out our guide on caring for your vagina after sex to ensure you always have a happy honeypot.
